What is C-Clamp?

Also known as G-cramp or G-Clamp, it’s a type of device that is used to hold a metal or wood workpiece. It’s mainly used by welders and carpenters. If you’re wondering why it’s known as “C” and not any other alphabet – well, the reason for the name is quite simple. The tool looks like the letter “C” thanks to its unique C-shaped frame. When considered along with its screw, it looks like the capital G, and hence it’s also known as G-clamp.

How is it made, and how does it work?

It’s generally made using cast iron or high-quality steel. At the top of the C frame, it has a small flat edge. At the bottom of the frame, there is a threaded hole into which the screw goes in. One end of the screw has a flat edge that is similar to the flat edge at the top. The other end of the screw has a small metal bar that is perpendicular to the screw. This flat metal bar gives the leverage for tightening the screw.

When the clamp is closed completely, the flat end of the screw comes in contact with the flat edge of the frame. The object to be held firmly is positioned between the top and flat edges and is held in place securely by tightening the screw.

The screw plays a crucial role in the operation of the tool. The top edge of the tool is positioned on the object to be held. Then, the tool operator tightens the screw until the object is held satisfactorily. To remove the object, the screw is rotated in the opposite direction.

Applications of C-Clamp

The C-Clamp is a versatile tool and is used across industries. It can be used in any workplace that requires a firm grip on the workpiece. While welding and carpentry are two major applications of the C-clamp, it’s not limited to it.

Here are some other creative uses of C-Clamp:

• Use it as a pipe wrench – tighten the c-clamp against a pipe and use it to twist it
• To ferry project materials from and to the workplace – the handles give you better leverage while carrying heavy materials
• Secure doors
• Clear a blocked kitchen sink – tighten a C-clamp on the hose before plunging it.
• To anchor tablecloths firmly to the table
